"The kids love it!  We ride the Southland every year.  It's their favorite field trip!"
- Jackie Angelone, North Providence Boys & Girls Club

Educational Cruises

The Southland offers a lively, stimulating cruise covering a broad range of subjects.  Our cruise enriches school programs and provides a setting that makes lessons more meaningful.  Teachers who have visited the Southland Riverboat love it and return every year!

The Southland Riverboat boasts beautiful scenery along with a narration that is rich in history.  We can accommodate groups of 20 to 140, we are handicapped accessible, have a full-service snack bar and cruise in calm waters at all times.

Some of the topics our narration covers:

Port of Galilee
The Port of Galilee is the largest fishing port in all of New England and the 2nd largest on the East Coast with over 200 fishing vessels in its fleet.  We will tell you about the different types of fishing vessels in the port including  Inshore & Offshore Draggers, Inshore & Offshore Lobster boats, Commercial Clamming vessels, Eastern and Western Rig fishing vessels, and steel, wooden and fiberglass fishing boats.

You will also learn where all the fish go after they are caught, to the fish packing and processing plants.  Galilee has four companies; Point Judith Fisherman's Company, Ocean State Lobster, Town Dock Fish Company and Paiva Shellfish Company which process and pack the seafood for shipment throughout the world as well as your local fish markets here in Rhode Island.

The Point Judith Lighthouse
You will view the 65 ft. high lighthouse that has been guiding mariners for over 100 years. Did you know that mariners can see the Point Judith Light from 12 miles away on a clear night?

U.S. Coast Guard - Point Judith
You will cruise by the Point Judith Lighthouse and the U.S. Coast Guard Station while listening to the history and facts of these two important buildings.  You will also get to see the Boat House where the Coast Guard  keep their three rescue vessels standing by for any emergency that may arise between Watch Hill and Newport, RI.  The three vessels are the 47 ft. Rescue Motor Life Boat - all aluminum and capable of actually rolling over in seas as high as 30 ft.  The 27 ft. Rigid Hull Inflatable - the fastest rescue boat around, is capable of speeds of up to 60 mph. The 22 ft. Rigid Hull Inflatable is capable of speeds up to 50 mph.  You may even get to see them in action!

Lobsters
We will talk about the lobster extensively, from when it is born to when it is caught and taken to your favorite seafood store.  You will view workers stringing skate fish to be used as bait for the lobsters.  The Port of Galilee is considered to be the "Offshore" Lobster capital of the world!

Block Island
Your students will catch a glimpse of Block Island off our coastline and hear the interesting facts that make the Island so unique.  They'll even get to see the new hi-speed catamaran ferry cruising out of the harbor.  Did you know that Block Island is home to over 200 species of birds and there are 360 freshwater ponds on the island?

Beaches
South County boasts more beautiful beaches than anywhere else in Southern New England.  You will sail by Salty Brine State Beach, Jerusalem Beach, East Matunuck State Beach, Break Water Village Beach, Roger Wheeler State Beach and also view along the coastline the beaches of Green Hill, Charlestown, Misquamicut and Watch Hill.  Why is Roger Wheeler  the most popular family beach in Rhode Island?  Well, it is because the beach is protected by break walls and you will never find waves or an undertow along these shores during the summertime months.

Marinas
The Southland will sail past Snug Harbor Marina, Southern View Marina, Point View Marina, Billington Cove Marina, Ram Point Marina, Silver Spring Marina and Stone Cove Marina.  Your students will have the opportunity to see sailboats, charter fishing boats, power boats, jet skis, yachts, boston whalers, tug boats and an assortment of different boats cruising the waters of Galilee.

Wildlife - Birds
Bird lovers are in for a real treat, you may see Terns, Gulls, Red-Winged Black Birds, Osprey, Cormorants, Canada Geese, ducks, Snowy Egrets, White Swans and even the elusive Great Blue Heron.

Point Judith Pond
The Point Judith Pond is the largest salt water pond in Rhode Island.  The highlight of the trip is cruising these waters and sailing around the eleven different islands.
